Veeam Kasten is a data protection/data management platform purpose-built for Kubernetes environments. It supports backup, restore, disaster recovery (DR), and application mobility for Kubernetes-native workloads, and increasingly for VMs running within or alongside Kubernetes clusters.
The flagship product is Kasten K10. It’s designed for enterprise scale, with security, automation, flexibility, and support for hybrid/multi-cloud or on-prem Kubernetes clusters.
Here are the major functions and properties Veeam Kasten offers:
- Backup & Restore of Kubernetes Applications
Veeam Kasten can backup the full application stack: Kubernetes objects (Deployments, Services, ConfigMaps, Secrets, CRDs, etc.), plus persistent volumes/data. On restore, you can restore at the namespace or cluster scope. - Disaster Recovery
You can replicate/move workloads between clusters (for instance, for DR). Supports cross-cluster restores. Also supports restoring to different infrastructure or cloud providers. - Application Mobility
Enables you to migrate application(s) between Kubernetes clusters or from on-prem to cloud (or vice versa). Also supports transformations (adjusting metadata, e.g., storage class, labels) during restore to adapt to target environments.
- Security, Compliance, and Ransomware Protection
- Immutable backups/data immutability (so data cannot be changed/deleted maliciously)
- Encryption, integration with key management systems (e.g. AWS KMS, HashiCorp Vault)
- Integration with storage providers, cloud providers, and Kubernetes distributions.
- Integration with CI/CD / GitOps workflows (e.g., ability to manage backup policies declaratively, version them, tie into GitOps tools)
- Exporting backup data to other stores, off-site vaults, cloud storage, etc.
