Is your RHEL installation getting old? What to do!

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) is the enterprise-grade platform trusted worldwide for running mission-critical workloads securely and reliably. However, using outdated versions of any operating system increases security risks and prevents you from taking advantage of the latest features and performance improvements. Staying current can sometimes feel challenging, so this article explains the RHEL lifecycle, why upgrades matter, and the available options for keeping your systems supported.

Understanding the RHEL lifecycle

Each RHEL release follows a defined lifecycle with three main phases:

  • Full Support: Systems receive all security updates, bug fixes, and new features. This is the ideal state for production workloads.
  • Maintenance Support: Only critical security fixes and urgent bug patches are provided. No new features or hardware enablement are included.
  • Extended Life Phase (ELP): After maintenance ends, only limited maintenance services are available.

Special scenarios

Organizations often face unique challenges that delay upgrades, such as:

  • Reliance on third-party software certified for specific RHEL versions.
  • Mission-critical environments where configuration changes are tightly controlled.
  • In-house applications or hardware drivers are tied to an older release.
  • Complex upgrade projects require cross-team coordination.

For these cases, Red Hat offers targeted add-ons and services to help bridge the gap until an upgrade is feasible.

Extended support options

  • Extended Update Support (EUS): Available with premium subscriptions (and as an add-on for standard), EUS allows staying on a specific even minor release (e.g., 8.8, 9.2) for 24 extra months.
  • Extended & Enhanced Update Support (RHEL 9+): Adds another 24 months on top of EUS.
  • Extended Lifecycle Support (ELS): For older releases (e.g., RHEL 6, RHEL 7), ELS provides ongoing critical security patches and selected bug fixes. The Long Life Add-On extends coverage further (currently only for RHEL 6).
  • RHEL Security Select Add-On: For highly regulated or critical environments, this add-on delivers targeted patching for specific CVEs beyond standard coverage.

While these options are valuable, the best approach remains upgrading to a fully supported release as soon as possible. Official lifecycle dates are available on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux lifecycle page.

Why staying up to date matters

  • Security: Fully supported systems benefit from rapid patching for newly discovered vulnerabilities.
  • Compliance: Many industries require software to be on supported versions.
  • Compatibility: Older releases may lack support for new drivers and hardware.
  • Performance & Features: New versions bring improvements and innovations, along with updated software packages.

What’s new in RHEL 10

  • Image Mode: Deploy and manage systems via container images, even across major upgrades.
  • RHEL Lightspeed: A command-line assistant powered by generative AI to support sysadmins.
  • Post-Quantum Cryptography: First-in-market support for quantum-resistant digital signatures and key exchange algorithms.

Upgrade paths

  • LEAPP (In-Place Upgrade): Recommended for moving one major version ahead (e.g., RHEL 7 → 8). LEAPP automates upgrades while preserving configurations.
  • Redeploy (Clean Install): Install a fresh system and migrate workloads manually. This is often the best choice when skipping multiple major versions (e.g., RHEL 7 → 10).

Automating upgrades

Automation greatly reduces upgrade complexity:

  • Ansible Validated Content for LEAPP enables in-place upgrades at scale.
  • Automation for Redeployments helps standardize baselines, remediate drifts, and streamline migrations.
